European Certificate in Medical Genetics and Genomics (ECMGG)

BACKGROUND

The ECMGG examination is a joint development of the UEMS Section of Medical Genetics (UEMS-SMG) and the Branch of Medical Genetics and Genomics of the European Board of Medical Genetics (EBMG-BMGG), and has the support of the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG). The examination is overseen and supervised by the ECMGG Examination Committee of the UEMS-SMG. It is not restricted to European candidates, although priority will be given to candidates from European nations which are members of the UEMS Section of Medical Genetics. The ECMGG will be valid for practice only in countries where it is ratified as an official certificate for this purpose by national regulatory bodies or organisations.

Following a pilot examination held in Milan in June 2018, the first full examinations took place in June 2019, as a satellite event of the European Human Genetics Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden (the exam was delivered as a Diploma – the EDMGG). In 2021 and 2022, the ECMGG examination was successfully delivered as a virtual (online) examination in cooperation with a commercial provider (CYIM, Rennes, France).

The majority of candidates were successful and were awarded a certificate, valid for life. See the list of certification holders.
